Introducing Starlight: The Canadian Movie Channel

Starlight is a new specialty television channel that will be devoted entirely to Canadian movies, particularly feature films intended for theatrical release. The service will carry 100% Canadian feature film programming. It will invest a forecasted $23 million a year back into Canadian film production, providing a major new complement of funds already available through Telefilm and other sources, resulting in the production of 8 to 12 new Canadian films each year.

Starlight is supported by a number of distinguished filmmakers and members of the film industry, including Robert Lantos, Norm Bolen, Hussain Amarshi, Denys Arcand, David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, Niv Fichman, Paul Gross, David Kassie, Lyse Lafontaine, Victor Loewy, Guy Maddin, Deepa Mehta, Mark Musselman, Denise Robert, Patricia Rozema and Denis Villeneuve.

Starlight's application is now public after a year of planning. The CRTC's proposed date of the license hearings is April 23. 

We recognize the need to make Canadian films more accessible. We feel that Starlight fills a gap left by Canada's broadcasting networks.
