Charlotte and Cameron Hill are in denial about the fact that they are trapped in a loveless marriage. The film takes place on the night of the couple’s 2nd wedding anniversary and while Charlotte prepares a cake for the occasion she is swept into a reflective moment of her entire relationship with her husband. The mundane act of baking a cake is a metaphor for each step of their relationship. Charlotte is thrown into a panic when she wakes up from her daydream to find the cake burning. Torn between whether or not to start from scratch, a flustered Charlotte ices the cake in an effort to hide the burnt outer layer. This action sums up the couple’s pretense relationship and is a representation of the mask that hides their true feelings.
