A teenage girl is desperate to save her young sister from undergoing female genital mutilation. This ground breaking and compelling short drama documentary highlights the myths and misconceptions that appear to justify the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Yasmin, a female living in Bristol, is trying to persuade her mother not to put her sister through FGM.
This film was a collaborative production between a group of 26 young people aged 14-17 from several schools in Bristol guided by professional filmmakers Bloom Productions. The group is all-female with the majority from Somalia and 7 with refugee status. Due to the subject matter, the group faced resistance from the older Somali community which culminated in a meeting with the “elders” chaired by the local police.
