Queen City Blues

Queen City Blues is about a neurotic woman who is dissatisfied with her life and expresses it through a critique of the city she lives in. The city, of course, is Regina, and throughout the story we see Katie’s subjective view of a place she claims stunts everything from romantic relationships to an enjoyment of the outdoors. On the opposite side of the spectrum, we have Miles, Katie’s date for the evening. Miles matches Katie’s intellectual charm throughout the date, and the two form a quick chemistry that shows promise. Despite this chemistry, Katie’s endless string of jokes and observations at the expense of Regina makes Miles question her perspective. He sees Katie’s critique as a problem beyond that of the city, as he states her cynical approach will leave her dissatisfied, regardless of location. Katie’s natural shielded response sees her storm out of Mile’s apartment. To her, the date is perfectly summed up by her opening monologue, “a short period of warmth followed by a frigid desolation spanning an inordinate amount of time.” Just as this ‘inordinate’ amount of time is beginning, she has a moment of recognition on her walk home. This recognition sparks Miles’ positive perspective in her mind, and so she begins to heed his advice and begins to see her surroundings anew.
